The UK and US have hammered out a major bilateral deal that will ensure zero levies on British pharmaceutical shipments entering the US market.

The Terms of the Accord

As part of the deal, the UK has agreed to increase spending on pharmaceuticals through the National Health Service (NHS). This pledge guarantees that duties on these crucial goods will remain at nothing for a period of the next three years.

This deal follows earlier threats to significantly raise duties on patented drug products, with potential rates floated reaching one hundred percent.

"This arrangement between the UK bolsters the global environment for cutting-edge drugs and brings much-needed balance to transatlantic medicine commerce," an announcement declared.

Trade Significance

Pharmaceuticals constitute one of the UK's biggest exports to the US, which is easily the largest destination for large companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Trade data reveal that in the year leading up to last September, the UK sold pharmaceutical products valued at billions to the US. This amount made up 17.4% of British export trade in that span.

"This agreement safeguards employment, boosts funding and facilitates the UK to become a international leader for medical research," a government official commented.

Specific British Pledges

The agreement entails several specific pledges from the UK:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will lift the price threshold at which it judges new therapies to be unaffordable by twenty-five percent.
  • Increased NHS Spending: There is a aim to double total public funding on treatments from 0.3 percent of the national economy to 0.6 percent over the coming ten years.
  • Payback Limit: The percentage pharmaceutical firms must return to the NHS to control costs will be capped at fifteen percent. Previously, rebates were more than 20%.

Recent Tensions

The pact takes place against a long-running row between the sector and the ministers over medicine costs and approval rates.

This friction were intensified by claims that US customers were paying a premium for the same drugs than people in the Britain and the EU.

Recently, several significant manufacturing plans in the UK have been delayed or abandoned, while multi-billion-dollar expansions have been pledged toward projects in the United States.

A senior figure publicly accepted that the NHS must spend more on medicines, noting that its spending on drugs had declined as a percentage of its total funding over the previous ten-year period.
