A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public infrastructure. They were built at an rapid speed, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
