Roughly 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.

Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a release.

Law enforcement say they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish substance.

The fluid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they reported.

Law enforcement then discovered many other smeared cars and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.

Law enforcement state initial examinations indicate the fluid was probably human bodily fluid.

"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; investigators are not yet informed of any injuries in connection with the incident," they added.

City officials said they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the community for details.

An important representative commented the attack left him stunned and had to be resolved rapidly.

"This event strikes at the center of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he stated on online, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at individuals of foreign heritage in February 2020.
