The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
