Severe winds attaining speeds of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in approximately 90,000 properties experiencing outages and compelled officials to call off in excess of 100 flights, according to domestic outlets.
These gusts are impacting the whole South Island and lower areas of the North Island, according to the national weather agency.
New Zealand authorities have issued uncommon high-level wind alerts - the most severe warning - in key areas encompassing these major districts.
People have been encouraged to avoid going outside, stay off roads, and get ready for additional utility disruptions.
Widespread Impact and Emergency Response
This outage appears to be affecting residences mostly in the southern region, although officials state that power was being slowly brought back.
Domestic outlets have stated that in some places homes have lost their roofs, and power lines and trees have been brought down by the winds.
Across Wellington, a man was lost his life after being impacted by a tree branch at a well-known hiking path on earlier this week.
Additionally in the city, a female was pushed toward moving cars on a street by a powerful blast, in a moment that was filmed in a popular vehicle recording.
Aircraft services entering and leaving the city have been suspended due to the gusts, while some roads and libraries are shut down.
Meanwhile Canterbury officials have declared a state of emergency, to support disaster response efforts.
Strike Action During Severe Conditions
The powerful gales on this day come as many of teachers, doctors and other public workers are participating in what has been called a "major walkout", requesting improved salaries and workplace environments.
But the intense climate has compelled them to alter certain arrangements, with several external protests shifted to interior venues or cancelled.
Like conditions are also sweeping Australia, bringing a period of extreme heat to the country's outback.
Officials have issued fire bans for fear of forest fires.
