Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using such treatments must be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the jabs explains the heightened regain.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
