Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

Pat Cummins has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors at play, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
