Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any major prize-giving event draws close, you'll find an outcry to include of new categories to recognize unsung work and fill the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, however the design behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
