Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge particular calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
